Bioethical Collection and Health Rights

Through specific monographs we study in greater depth the ethical problems arising from the application of advances in science and medicine. Aspects as relevant as patient autonomy, informed consent, doctor's rights and data protection, amongst others, have been the subject of these very practical monographs.

Vol. 17 - Challenges in public health: Rights and Duties of citizens

As professor Mayor Zaragoza states in the prologue of the latest work of Fundación salud 2000, Retos en salud pública: derechos y deberes de los ciudadanos, when he refers to the importance of public health nowadays,“ the major task is to extend the progress”, “the big challenge is to share”, “the transformations are unpostponable”.

The new Public Health Law, which was adopted at the end of last Legislature, provides universal health care and sets new organizational bases trying to attend to the needs and new challenges.

 

The referred law will invite Spanish specialists with international prestige to reflect on the prevention science of main causes of death in Spain, such as cardiovascular and oncological diseases. The first part of the meeting was devoted to the analysis of the latest developments and news about the prevention of those pathologies, and also about neurological and inherited metabolic diseases, many of them fulfilling the criteria of “orphan diseases”.

 

At the same time, the public health, characterized by the supremacy of general interest over the particular, raises many legal and bioethical disputes. The second part of the meeting will include issues such as transparency, disclosure, privacy, rights and duties of citizens in this area. These subjects, sometimes, must support the administrative action and the responsibility with the future generations by the intergenerational solidarity. In addition, it will address the link between public health and Social Corporate Responsibility of Pharmaceutical Companies.

Vol. 16 - Sexual and Reproductive Health in Spain

The Organic Law 2 / 2010 of sexual and reproductive health, and abortion, invites reflection to leading experts on the current state of science, the reality of Spanish society and the future prospects for contraception and assisted human reproduction. In this role devotes his attention to the first part of this work, which also includes a chapter on molecular biological aspects of mother-embryo dialogue that occurs in the origin of life.

The second part, dunk in the bioethical and legal analysis of these materials, contains a practical comment on the above law (known as the abortion law reform "), including a comparison with the situation in neighboring countries, and Attention is also given to issues such as conscientious objection and health problems of children mature toward sexuality, the religious prospective (Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam and Judaism) of contraception, abortion and reproductive techniques, and the importance of movement Feminist in the development of these issues.

Vol. 15 - Genetic Medicine Clinic in the century XXI

The work has two distinct parts. The first contains a tour of the state of the science and future prospects in each of the different phases of life that can occur in genetic medicine clinic (preconception, embryonic, prenatal and postnatal care, the latter both children and adults) as well as about the situation and expectations of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, all so informative and exposed by the best clinicians working this field in Spain.

The second part addresses the legal perspective of bioethics and genetic medicine clinic, with special emphasis on the scope of autonomy of the citizen and the responsibility as the key ethical imperative that has to preside over this medical specialty. This section of the work includes a final chapter on the horizon of human genetic enhancement and eugenics problem, which we review the trends of thought and most important ethical theories of our day, from the position of so-called "bioconservadores" to the known as the "transhumanist" or supporters of improvement, including also the religious vision.

Precisamente, ésta es una novedad del libro respecto a los títulos anteriores de la Colección, porque no sólo se dirige a los profesionales sanitarios, sino también a los ciudadanos interesados en estas cuestiones.

La obra se estructura en 5 capítulos en los que se realiza un análisis detallado de las diferentes corrientes de pensamiento ético y filosófico que rodean el final de la vida en relación con la perspectiva clínica, así como un estudio del origen y la evolución histórica del concepto de instrucciones previas y una descripción detalllada de la situación legal de las mismas con una recopilación de los casos judiciales habidos hasta la fecha.
