Additional Information

Eight years ago he was invited by the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon to organise the Bioethics Centre, in its educational and research areas, having directed five Masters in Bioethics that are currently in course.

He has published, in national and foreign journals, five hundred and forty eight scientific works, most of them concerning the specialty of Ophthalmology, for which he is Professor, having been the Director of the Gama Pinto Ophthalmology Institute and of the Ophthalmology Unit in the Hospital Escolar de Santa Maria, where he worked until retirement.

He has published ten scientific books, four of which are on Bioethics and Medical Ethics:
A Ética na Medicina Portuguesa (Ethics in Portuguese Medicine), Lisbon, 1994; Bioética Contemporânea (Contemporary Bioethics), Lisbon, 2000; Bioética na sua Trajectória (Bioethics In Your Career), Lisbon 2001; Perspectivas da Bioética (Perspectives in Bioethics), Lisbon 2003 and he coordinated the book Contributos para a Bioética em Portugal (Contributions to Bioethics in Portugal), published in April 2002.

As a Professor in Ophthalmology he has published the following books:
Potenciais Corticais Evocados por Simulação Luminosa em Neuro-Oftalmologia Clínica (Cortical Potentials Evocated by Light Stimulation in Clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology), Lisbon, 1968; A informação Ecográfica em Oftalmologia (Ultrasound Scan Information in Ophthalmology), Lisbon, 1980; Estudos Oftalmológicos (Ophthalmology Studies), Lisbon, 1972; Avaliação da Política de Saúde da Fundação Gulbenkian (Evaluation of the Health Policies of the Gulbenkian Foundation), Lisbon, 1990

He is a Grand Official of the Military Order of Sant’ Iago da Espada. He is a member of the International Academy of Ophthalmology (Chair No. 36), of the Medicine Academy of Rome, of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain (corresponding member), of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, of the Academy of Medicine of Poland and of the Albert Schweitzer International University
